Southern Entertainment Awards Honor Indie Artists


Southern independent Hip Hop, although a thriving and powerful facet of the culture, is often lesser recognized than it's east and west coast counterparts. Now in its sixth year, the Annual Southern Entertainment Awards (SEA) aims to change that.

Last year's awards featured over 3000 in attendance, as people gathered to honor independent southern Hip Hop artists. Houston-based BCD Music Group gave the 2008 Indy Rap Artist of The Year a $30,000 package containing a cash prize of $5,000, an all expense paid trip to their Houston facility, and a recording and EP release budget. This is just one example of the opportunities SEA founders Janiro Hawkins II, Jesse "DJ Infamous" Johnson and Brent "DJ Outlaw" Buford saw in the indie music of the south.
