Detroit mayor turns down plea offer


Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's legal team has turned down an offer from prosecutors Friday to drop one of two assault charges if the mayor would resign.

The offer came during a court appearance in Wayne County Circuit Court in which the mayor was arraigned on felony charges that he interfered with officers trying to serve a subpoena.

China accused over iTunes outage


Customers in China of Apple's iTunes online music store were unable to download songs this week, and an activist group said Beijing was trying to block access to a new Tibet-themed album.

In Internet forums, iTunes users complained they had been unable to download music since Monday. That was a day after the Art of Peace Foundation announced the release of "Songs for Tibet," with music by Sting, Alanis Morissette, Garbage and others, and a 15-minute talk by the Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan leader.

Del The Funky Homosapien Leaks Vintage Tracks


Veteran Bay area emcee Del The Funky Homosapien just released his eight solo album 11th Hour earlier this year. As the Hieroglyphics front-man works on upcoming projects, he has premiered Del's Leak Pack Volume 1.

D Dot Reintroduces The Madd Rapper On New Mixtape


Platinum producer Deric "D Dot" Angelettie has been hard at work with a number of emcees from his hometown of Brooklyn recently. The producer for hits such as Notorious B.I.G.'s "Hypnotize" and Jay-Z's "Where I'm From" announced yesterday that he about to return to his alter-ego, The Madd Rapper.

Joined by Statik Selektah, the two will release Appreciate The Hate: The Madd Rapper Chronicles Volume 1 this month. The mixtape will feature the Internet hit, "Brooklyn Let's Go" featuring Joell Ortiz, Maino and others. Redman, Notorious B.I.G., E Ness and others are included on the mixtape.

Da Brat Gets Three Years In Prison


Chart topping rapper Da Brat was sentenced to three years in prison today (August 22), after being charged with assault for hitting a woman in the face with a bottle of rum.

The prison sentence stems from a November 2007 incident, in which Da Brat, born Shawntae Harris, argued with Shala Stevens, a waitress working at Jermaine Dupri’s Club 72.

Stevens, a budding model, Atlanta Falcons cheerleader and actress, suffered deep lacerations to her cheek and swelling to her forehead.

50 Cent Meets With Investigators Over Fire


Hip-Hop star 50 Cent have revealed that the rapper has met with Suffolk County authorities yesterday (August 22).

Representatives for 50 Cent released a statement denying recent reports that he is using a smokescreen of lawyers to avoid cooperating in an investigation of a suspicious fire, which burnt his Dix Hills, Long Island mansion to the ground.

The Wire's 'Snoop' Arrested Over Murder Trial


Police arrested popular actress Felicia "Snoop" Pearson on minor drug charges on Wednesday (August 20), after she was detained for refusing to cooperate as a witness in a murder trial.

Members of Baltimore's Homicide Unit entered Snoop's Northeast Baltimore home with a "body attachment" warrant, which allowed authorities to arrest and detain her.

Rihanna, Pink, T.I. added as performers at VMAs


Rihanna is back for another performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, along with Pink, Paramore and T.I. , who will be making his first appearance at a major awards show since his arrest right before an awards ceremony last year.

The VMAs are set for Sept. 7 in Los Angeles with British comedian Russell Brand as the host. Performers already announced include the Jonas Brothers, Lil Wayne and Kid Rock.

Hip Hop Album Sales: Week Ending 8/17/08


Not a whole lot going on in Hip Hop this week as Lil Wayne continues his dominance on the charts. In his 10th week on the charts, Weezy’s Tha Carter 3 holds steady at #6 with 61k sold (2,204,760 sold overall). Rihanna’s re-release of Good Girl Gone Bad continues to surge as it pushes its way to #9 with another 42k sold in its 63rd week on the charts (1,636,704 sold to date). Lloyd’s Lessons In Love falls ten slots to #17 with 22k sold while Nas’ Untitled continues to head towards gold with just under 19k sold (335,176k sold overall). Yung Berg makes a splash with his Look What You Made Me album debuting at #20 with 19,150 sold.

Hospital death rates unveiled for first-time comparison


Motorists heading through the Lehigh Valley from Allentown, Pa., earlier this year passed two giant billboards proclaiming: "Fast Heart Attack Care Saved My Husband's Life."

What the billboards didn't say was just how fast. It took 24 minutes for Richard Silverman's doctors at Lehigh Valley Hospital to clear a 100% blockage from his heart's most vital artery. That's a third of the 90-minute goal that hospitals strive for.

Goodie M.O.B. Reunites On Stage During Nelly Concert


Atlanta fans were treated to a surprise Goodie M.O.B. reunion last night (August 19), when all four members of the legendary group appeared on stage during a promotional Nelly concert.

Dame Dash Sued Over Missed Mortgage Payments


Hip-Hop entrepreneur Damon Dash is being sued by Eastern Savings Bank, for missing the monthly mortgage payments on a pair of Manhattan apartments.

In a lawsuit filed in Manhattan Supreme Court, Dash has failed the $78,504 monthly note for the apartments since January.

Judge Orders Mediation in Game Assault Case


Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elihu Berle has ordered The Game to consider mediation in a lawsuit where the rapper is accused of assaulting a basketball coach.

Pro-amateur coach Shannon Roderick sued The Game in March alleging assault, battery, negligence and civil rights violations stemming from an altercation at a celebrity basketball game.

DJ Red Alert To Celebrate 25 Years On Radio


Hip Hop pioneer DJ Red Alert will be celebrating 25 years of deejaying on radio this October. The honoring has already begun, as the icon was awarded August 17 at Harlem Week. The 25th anniversary will include weekly events in the New York tri-state area as well as a January honorary weekend in Japan.

Red Alert spent a bulk of his radio career at Kiss 98.7 FM, with time at Power 105.1 FM. He has been instrumental in the careers of Jungle Brothers, A Tribe Called Quest and Queen Latifah.

Wendy Williams' Fox TV Show Syndicated


Despite being equally loved and hated within the Hip Hop community, Wendy Williams is moving up. The self-proclaimed "Queen of All Media" will have her Fox TV show nationally syndicated later this year. Fox initially ordered 30 episodes of the show for a trial run in New York, Dallas and Detroit to see how many viewers Williams could bring in.

Teen With Nooses Gets Jail Time


Jeremiah Munsen of Colfax, Louisiana, admitted in court back in April that he placed two nooses on the back of his pickup truck on September 20, and pleaded guilty to a federal hate crime of threatening and intimidating marchers near Jena, Louisiana.

Now, the Louisiana 19-year-old has been sentenced to prison for four months, according to the Associated Press.

JayZ' Headphones Approved By FCC


Hip-Hop mogul Jay-Z may be in a deal with Motorola, as a pair of "JayZ" headphones were recently approved by the FCC. According to CNet.com, the JayZ headphones allow the simultaneous use of a Bluetooth audio device and a cellphone. If you're listening to music and your phone rings, you can opt to transfer the call to your headphones and when you hang up, the music resumes. While there's no official confirmation of Jay-Z's involvement in the product, the mogul, who recently placed second of Forbes listing of the richest Hip-Hop artists, also had a deal with Nokia in 2004, which resulted in the production of the Black Phone.

U.S. at risk of cyberattacks, experts say


The next large-scale military or terrorist attack on the United States, if and when it happens, may not involve airplanes or bombs or even intruders breaching American borders.

Instead, such an assault may be carried out in cyberspace by shadowy hackers half a world away. And Internet security experts believe that it could be just as devastating to the U.S.'s economy and infrastructure as a deadly bombing.

Experts say last week's attack on the former Soviet republic of Georgia, in which a Russian military offensive was preceded by an Internet assault that overwhelmed Georgian government Web sites, signals a new kind of cyberwar, one for which the United States is not fully prepared.
