Survey: Many would take Internet over sex

Just how reliant are you on the Internet?

More women would give up sex rather than go without Internet access, according to a new survey.

Nearly half of the women questioned by Harris Interactive said they'd be willing to forgo sex for two weeks, rather than give up their Internet access, according to a study released Monday by Intel, which commissioned the survey.

While 46 percent of the women surveyed were willing to engage in abstinence versus losing their Internet, only 30 percent of the men surveyed were willing to do likewise.

The U.S. survey, which queried 2,119 adults last month, found that the gap grew even wider for both men and woman who were 18 to 34 years old. For woman, the percentage of those willing to skip the sheets in favor of the Web rose to 49 percent, while it climbed to 39 percent for men.

IT at sea: Google to launch a computer navy

Forget the Royal Navy and the U.S. Marines -- the 'computer navy' is on its way, and digital media on the high seas are set to make a steaming comeback.

It seemed that floating media firms were a thing of the past when the United Kingdom's last major offshore pirate radio station, Radio Caroline, followed other European and American examples and died out in the early 1990s.

But, fast-forward 20 years and enter Internet giant Google.

According to a patent application seen by London newspaper "The Times," Google is considering launching barges up to seven miles (11km) offshore to host the massive data centers required to run its Internet search engines.

How To Erase Your Tracks Online

Apple calls it "Private Browsing." Microsoft calls it "InPrivate." Google's new Chrome browser calls it "Incognito." And yes, practically everyone else calls it "Porn Mode."

Chrome's launch earlier this month confirmed a new feature as a must-have in Web-browsing software: a cloak of invisibility that hides the user's path around the Web. Incognito browsing, like a similar setting in a new version of Internet Explorer, is designed to erase any trace of the sites you've recently visited, wiping away cached pages and browsing history from your hard drive and turning off the browser's autocomplete function, which can reveal what you've recently typed into text boxes.

911 to Accept Cellphone Videos

The New York Police Department opened a new front for tipsters on Tuesday, urging citizens to send in videos of crimes in progress.

Police Commissioner Raymond W. Kelly and Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg announced the start of the program in the department’s Real Time Crime Center at Police Headquarters.

In August, the department began accepting tips by text message.

The police hope to build on the network of surveillance cameras, 911 tips and text messages, tapping into the technology and habits that are already part of the daily behavior of millions of New Yorkers.

The idea takes the 911 call one step further. When a witness calls 911, the dispatcher takes the details of the crime and then assigns a special code to the report if the caller says he has photographs or video that might help solve it. A detective then calls the tipster with instructions on how to send the visual data into a department computer.

Apple unveils 'thinnest iPod yet'

Apple has unveiled the latest version of its iPod Nano, featuring what is says are the thinnest measurements yet.

The fourth generation Nano was launched at a US press conference by Apple chief Steve Jobs, who announced new shuffle and library features.

He also listed the Nano's environmental credentials, including arsenic-free glass and a mercury and PVC-free body that is "highly recyclable".

The Nanos are expected to sell in the UK for £109 ($191) for the 8GB version.

The 16GB version will retail at £149.

Speaking live in San Francisco, Mr Jobs unveiled Apple's new Genius function which allows users to create automatic playlists from the iPod's library with the click of a button.

He said the function worked by taking one song and creating a playlist based on the user's song library and could also suggest other tracks the user might want to buy.

Mr Jobs said the new Nano also had a "shake to shuffle" mode, which sends the gadget to shuffle mode with the flick of a wrist.

The Apple chief executive officer said the company had sold more than 160 million iPods since the MP3 player was introduced seven years ago.

'Climate crisis' needs brain gain

the Large Hadron Collider, the world's biggest physics experiment

The most brilliant minds should be directed to solving Earth's greatest challenges, such as climate change, says Sir David King.

The former UK chief scientist will use his presidential address at the BA Science Festival to call for a gear-change among innovative thinkers.

He will suggest that less time and money is spent on endeavours such as space exploration and particle physics.

He says population growth and poverty in Africa also demand attention.

"The challenges of the 21st Century are qualitatively different from anything that we've had to face up to before," he told reporters before the opening of the festival, which is being held this year in Liverpool.

"This requires a re-think of priorities in science and technology and a redrawing of our society's inner attitudes towards science and technology."

Google Wants To Take Over The World With Chrome Browser

Google has launched its Google Chrome browser, and competitors are quite worried. They are worried not because Google has entered the browser war (which was expected for some time) but because Chrome is more than just a browser. Google wants to take over the Internet world, more or less, by providing a browser which is more or less a standalone Internet-oriented operating system, because it runs complicated web applications across different operating systems, which eventually can become obsolete.

Google's new browser open source, and written from scratch, and will feature many improvements such as multithreading, enabling separate threads to render separate tabs, preventing an overall browser lock-up due to a faulty page or, more frequently, a JavaScript glitch.

A social-networking site for the world of spying officially launches for the U.S. intelligence community this month.

But that's not the case at the CIA, FBI and the National Security Agency, where bosses are encouraging their staffs to use a new social-networking site designed for the super-secret world of spying.

"It's every bit Facebook and YouTube for spies, but it's much, much more," said Michael Wertheimer, assistant deputy director of national intelligence for analysis. The program is called A-Space, and it's a social-networking site for analysts within the 16 U.S. intelligence agencies

New music site rewards fans for buying songs

Being a trendsetter can be pricey. As any fashionista or gadget hound knows, the latest frocks and tech toys don't pay for themselves.

But a new Web site is trying to make it profitable for music lovers to stay ahead of the curve -- by paying them when other people purchase MP3s they've bought.

Berkeley, California-based Popcuts, which publicly launched its Web site in early August, charges users 99 cents per song. Thereafter, whenever someone else buys the same song, those who have already bought it get paid in credit that can be redeemed for more Popcuts music. The earlier you buy a song, the larger your cut of future sales.

Review: Google's Chrome needs more polish

Google Inc.'s new Web browser, called Chrome, does much of what a browser needs to do these days: It presents a sleek appearance, groups pages into easy-to-manage "tabs" and offers several ways for people to control their Internet privacy settings.

Yet my initial tests reveal that this "beta," or preliminary release, falls short of Google's goals, and is outdone in an important measure by the latest version of Microsoft Corp.'s Internet Explorer.

Chrome is a challenge to Microsoft's browser, used by about three-quarters of Web surfers. But it could equally be called a challenge to Microsoft's Office software suite, because what Google really wants to do is to make the browser a stable and flexible platform that can do practically everything we want to do with a computer, from word processing and e-mail to photo editing.
