Facebook unveils targeted 'social ads'


Facebook has unveiled plans to target advertisements by injecting them into its members' conversations, and now the popular online hangout must persuade its users to embrace the initiative.

Facebook is giving users some control over whether to share information on their buying habits and other online activities with friends. For the program announced Tuesday to work, enough users must actually say "yes" so advertisers can show users their pitches in the guise of friends' endorsements.

Common "Banks it for Barack"


Although Diddy's "Vote Or Die" campaign didn't get it done (depending on who you ask), hip hop continues to remain involved in the election process. Rapper Common is now featured in one of a series of celebrity public service announcements to Get-Out-the-Vote for presidential hopeful Barack Obama. The videos are funded by the Vote Hope organization.

The 60-second public service announcement features Common letting people know that he'll be voting for Obama. “I’m voting for Obama because he’s just there to do some good in the world,” he says in the video, as he urges others to do the same.

Rappers Kanye West and The Beastie Boys have teamed with over 100 other celebrities who will design lunch boxes to raise money for two non-profit hunger relief organizations.

Kanye West, The Beastie Boys, Gwyneth Paltrow, Yoko Ono, Elton John, John Mayer, Zac Posen Mike Myers and hundreds of others will create personalized lunchboxes, which will be auctioned off online to benefit the Food Bank For New York City and The Lunchbox Fund of South Africa.

A new federal indictment has been issued in Atlanta against members of Black Mafia Family (BMF), accusing the group of laundering money and transporting drugs.

This week finds Hip Hop being drilled out of the top 15. Regardless, Kanye West still is the top selling Hip Hop album on the charts as Graduation creeps to double platinum landing at #17 with 35k sold this week. T.I. Files Motion to Celebrate Thanksgiving


T.I.'s lawyers filed two motions yesterday (Nov. 6) asking a judge to allow the soon-to-be incarcerated rapper to have more than the permitted amount of visitors in his home for Thanksgiving.

T.I., though out on bail, is on house arrest until a trail alleging his purchase and ownership of illegal weapons begins.

Diddy Dodges Charges In Club Incident


Various sources report that Sean "Diddy" Combs will not be brought up on any criminal charges for his alleged altercation with Steven Acevedo on Oct. 13. Combs faced the threat of criminal assault charges after the 31-year-old Acevedo claimed Combs got into an argument with him over an unnamed female. Acevedo originally told police that Combs punched him in the face at approximately 3:30 a.m. inside Kiosk club in Manhattan's "SoHo" district.

Cops find themselves in arms race with criminals


The war on the streets is escalating. As gangs and other criminals pack more firepower, police departments say they find themselves in an arms race.

"It's not nice we have to arm ourselves like the soldiers in Iraq," said Sgt. Laurie Pfeil, who supervises a sheriff's road patrol in Palm Beach County and is now certified to carry a semiautomatic AR-15 rifle on the job. It's the civilian version of the military's M-16 used by U.S. soldiers in Iraq.

Immigration chief apologizes for 'offensive' costumes at her party


The Department of Homeland Security will investigate a Halloween costume party hosted by a top immigration official and attended by a man dressed in a striped prison outfit, dreadlocks and darkened skin make-up, a costume some say is offensive, the department's secretary said.

Julie Myers, head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and host of the fundraising party, was on a three-judge panel that originally praised the prisoner costume for "originality."

Brief News On The Roots

Black Man Charged With Hanging Noose On Tupac Statue


An African-American man has been charged with the noose vandalism of a Tupac statue at the Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts.

As SOHH previously reported, the center was vandalized early on the morning of October 20. Fliers bearing rants about various rappers, Hurricane Katrina and 9/11 were plastered to the Tupac statue and a noose was left hanging around its neck

43-year-old Dekalb resident, Kenneth Anthony Wilson, was charged with the felony, second degree criminal damage to property, on Thursday (Oct. 1), according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Trey Songz Arrested In Springfield, MA Following Shooting



R&B singer Trey Songz was arrested in Springfield, MA early Sunday (Nov 4) along with several members of his entourage following a shooting outside a local venue.

Songz was charged with behaving as a disorderly person and resisting arrest.
