CIA, FBI push 'Facebook for spies'

When you see people at the office using such Internet sites as Facebook and MySpace, you might suspect those workers are slacking off.

A social-networking site for the world of spying officially launches for the U.S. intelligence community this month.

But that's not the case at the CIA, FBI and the National Security Agency, where bosses are encouraging their staffs to use a new social-networking site designed for the super-secret world of spying.

"It's every bit Facebook and YouTube for spies, but it's much, much more," said Michael Wertheimer, assistant deputy director of national intelligence for analysis. The program is called A-Space, and it's a social-networking site for analysts within the 16 U.S. intelligence agencies

"Forgot your password" links the easy way in for hackers

Never mind creating a password with at least eight characters, two of which are numbers, one of which is a capital letter, and one of which is a symbol like (*&^%$). The easiest way for a hacker to weasel into your account is likely the "Forgot your password?" link.

"Forgot your password?" features are older than the Internet, providing businesses and site owners a simple way to let a user reset a forgotten password, provided he can verify his credentials by asking a few personal questions that only the rightful user should know.

Want a Better Relationship? Banish the TV

When my husband (then fiancé) suggested we start our married lives together TV-free, I thought he was joking. We hadn't moved in together yet, but weekends with this Big Ten grad, sports lover, and fantasy football devotee almost always involved at least a glimpse of some game on TV. Had he gone crazy ̶ or was this truly a brilliant idea?

Assured by his promises of more quality time as a married couple and the chance to stop zoning out in front of the tube together I agreed. So after our wedding bells rang, my newly betrothed and I moved into a condo together. Our TV had a new home too: a locked storage unit in the basement. Here's how we endured:

Confessions Of A Hip-Hop Journalist

Former editor in chief of the Source magazine Kim Osorio reveals the stories behind the stories from her upcoming book Straight From The Source: An Expose from the Former Editor in Chief of the Hip-Hop Bible.

I write. That's what I do. So writing a book was the natural progression for me. More recently, the contents of my own mental journal made its way onto the pages of what some are depicting as a tell-all. But to "tell-all" is not the point of this book that I have written.

Now, people may wonder why I chose to divulge certain information, in particular, my "sexual relations" (read it like they said it in the Nutty Professor). And I don't want the mentions of any artist's name to overshadow the purpose of this book. Names that purposely did not get any play on the cover, the back cover, the jacket copy, or the inside flap. So as a reader, when you walk into a book store and pick up this book, you won't know about the names on the inside until you actually read it. So you're so curious as to why those names were discussed at all? Well, it's pretty easy to figure out if you get the point of the book. But there are still those who just don't get it.

When sex becomes an addiction

"Californication" star David Duchovny made headlines for voluntarily entering rehab last week. But it wasn't for drugs or alcohol. It was for another dependency, one that affects millions of Americans but is seldom discussed: sex addiction.
While sex can be healthy for a relationship, some people develop an addiction to porn, affairs, and other behaviors.

While sex can be healthy for a relationship, some people develop an addiction to porn, affairs, and other behaviors.

Sex addiction, also called compulsive sexual behavior, is like a gambling compulsion or alcoholism: It's about devoting your free time to a behavior that you cannot stop, even if you damage relationships or prompt other negative consequences. That could mean extensively using pornography, having affairs, sleeping with prostitutes, and masturbating excessively, to the point where such behaviors get out of control.

If you think it's just about primal desire, think again.

How To Escape A Hurricane By Car

From Jalopnik.com

Evacuating from a hurricane involves more than just getting into your car and driving away from the coast. Of the estimated 120 deaths associated with Hurricane Rita, 107 of them were related to the mass vehicular evacuation rather than the storm itself. With hurricane watches being issued for the Mid-Atlantic and a major hurricane approaching the Bahamas, we thought it was a good time to review the proper steps an individual should take when evacuating from a storm in a motor vehicle.

Fact Check: Checking the GOP's speakers

Republican National Convention speakers held back their harshest rhetoric against Barack Obama and Democrats on Tuesday, but some got in a lick or two that require a touch of context.

SEN. JOSEPH LIEBERMAN, I-CONN.: "When Barack Obama was voting to cut off funding for our troops on the ground, John McCain had the courage to stand against the tide of public opinion and support the surge."

THE FACTS: Lieberman's statement is true — Obama voted once, in May of last year, against money for troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. The bill, however, passed overwhelmingly. He had voted in favor of troop funding in April, but that legislation was vetoed by President Bush because it included a call to pull troops out of Iraq. Before his May vote, Obama had voted for every bill that financed the troops since he joined the Senate.

HOUSE REPUBLICAN LEADER JOHN BOEHNER, R-OHIO: "They see Congress adjourning for the summer without a vote on comprehensive energy reforms ... When (House Speaker) Nancy Pelosi sent Congress home last month without an energy vote, Republicans refused to leave."

THE FACTS: Republicans have remained in the House during Congress' regularly scheduled August recess, demanding that Pelosi call the House back into session to vote on an energy bill that includes an increase in offshore oil drilling. The show of urgency is mostly theatrical, however, since offshore drilling would increase oil production, but not for seven to 10 years. Republicans had blocked Democratic proposals to tap the nation's petroleum reserve, curb oil speculation and force oil companies to drill on already leased federal lands.

FORMER SEN. FRED THOMPSON, R-TENN.: "Now our opponents tell you not to worry about their tax increases. They tell you they are not going to tax your family. No, they're just going to tax 'businesses'! So unless you buy something from a 'business,' like groceries or clothes or gasoline, or unless you get a paycheck from a big or a small 'business,' don't worry, it's not going to affect you."

THE FACTS: Obama would raise income taxes on the wealthiest and their capital gains and dividends taxes. He would raise payroll taxes on wealthiest by applying it to the portion of income over $250,000 and he would also raise corporate taxes. Only small businesses that make more than $250,000 a year would see taxes rise. Obama would provide $80 billion in tax breaks mainly for poor workers and the elderly, including tripling the Earned Income Tax Credit for minimum-wage workers and higher credits for larger families. The Tax Policy Center, a think tank run jointly by the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, concluded that Obama's plan would increase after-tax income for middle-income taxpayers by about 5 percent by 2012, or nearly $2,200 annually. McCain's plan, which cuts taxes across all income levels, would raise after tax-income for middle income taxpayers by 3 percent, the center concluded.
